Michael Karmon: Composer

I'm happy to work with anyone interested in writing music that involves the nylon-string guitar, and I'm comfortable working with musicians at any level of skill and experience. So if you're a guitarist who wants to compose, or a composer who wants to write for guitar, or if you like my music and would like to study with me, please feel free to contact me.

How lessons work: In general, you send me some of your music and I comment on various musical and technical aspects of the piece. You then explore or ignore any of my suggestions and spend as much time as you like revising your music. When you're ready, send me the next draft for comment. At some point we'll both feel that we've done all we can with the music, and if you wish we can then move on to the next piece.

Through this process we not only make the particular music we're working on as good as it can be, but also address compositional concepts like structure, musical flow, balance, thematic interest and development, variety of texture and color, and writing well for the instruments. And we continually work toward the goal of reaching your full potential as a composer so you can write music that is original, personal, and truly your own.

We can do all this through email, which I prefer. Or, if you wish, we can do a live chat or videoconference or talk on the phone. (If you live in the Los Angeles area you're welcome to come over to my house for lessons.)

What we can do: It's really up to you, and depends on your aspirations, dedication, and experience. Here are some ideas:

We can work together on writing one or more pieces, focusing on making them as personal and effective as possible.

We can revise and improve music you've already written.

We can rescue a piece that you've started but have not been able to finish.

If you're a less experienced and/or frustrated composer we can work on composing a piece using some of those great musical ideas you've got lying around.

I can guide you through some "composition etudes," or small pieces that are not really meant to be performed in concert, but rather are exercises for you to develop and experiment.

I can give you a one-time evaluation of some of your music and point out general areas you may want to work on some more.

If you're interested: First, write me an email and tell me a bit about yourself (musical experience, influences, aspiration, what you would like to accomplish, or anything else you might like to include.) Unless I'm very busy with my own music, I'll get back to you within 48 hours.

The next step is for you to email me some music. (A PDF file of a score is the best thing to send, but if you can't create a score we can work with any kind of recording or video you can produce.) I will then take a quick look at things, and get back to you with some options. There is no charge up to this point.

Cost: I charge $15 (US) for every 15 minutes I spend with your music. There is no charge for quick follow up questions and clarifications.
